We take a quick look at how Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly stacks up against the rest of the current FBS coaches in the nation in terms of money and wins.

With the history, tradition and money behind Notre Dame football, it’s not a ridiculous wish on behalf of Irish supporters to want the very best coach money can buy at the helm of the program.

The bottom line in college football is winning. Today, we take a look at how Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly matches up with the rest of the current FBS coaches in the nation when it comes to winning football games.

Let’s talk cash

According to CoachesHotSeat.com, Kelly’s $5 millon annual total compenation is less than 14 other coaches nationally. He makes the same as Mark Richt of Miami (Fl.), Chris Petersen of Washington, Scott Frost of Nebraska, Mike Gundy of Oklahoma State and Willie Taggart of Florida State. USA Today had some different numbers back in 2016. They showed Kelly making a little less than $1.6 million a year.

Winning Percentage

In terms of career winning percentage as a head coach, Brian Kelly is No. 20 nationally at .724. Six of the coaches ahead of Kelly in terms of career winning percentage make less money annually than Kelly does.

Wins

Brian Kelly is currently the leader nationally in the category of “most wins as a head coach” with 219. That puts him one win ahead of Alabama’s Nick Saban as of right now.

Longevity

Brian Kelly has been a head coach of an NCAA football team for 29 years. That’s the longest of any coach in the nation. Bill Snyder is right behind Kelly at 27 years, but is also 22 years older.

Winning games is nice, but winning championships is better. Kelly has won national titles during his career, just not at Notre Dame. Until he can lead the Irish to the top of the college football mountain, Brian Kelly will likely continue to be mentioned on “hot seat” lists and be a divisive figure in the eyes of the Irish faithful.
