Notre Dame Basketball: Top 10 Players Of The Mike Brey Era
8. Demetrius Jackson, 2013-2016
Jackson is a player that, unless you actually watched him play, you may not be able to fully appreciate. You simply cannot be a box score observer and appreciate how foolishly good this kid was.
Jackson was a major coup for Coach Brey in 2013. Many pundits thought he would be leaving Indiana to attend Illinois. The 2013 State of Indiana Mr. Basketball decided to stay home however, even if it meant he would have to sit behind upperclassmen Jerian Grant and Eric Atkins — something you rarely see from a Top 40 recruit/McDonalds All-American nowadays.
During his freshman campaign, he was able to log 22 minutes per game and also started 15 contests. While he was not one of the marquee players on the team, you could see the potential.
After the graduations of both Grant and Pat Connaughton in 2015, the Irish backcourt became the Jackson show. As a junior he averaged 15.8 points, 4.7 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game and led to him forgoing his senior season to enter the NBA draft.
Demetrius was taken 45th overall in the 2016 NBA draft by the Boston Celtics. He is currently playing in the NBA G-League for the Delware 87’s, the affiliate of the Philadelphia 76ers.
