There appears to be a movement to make the Michigan-Notre Dame football game a “green out”, and I like it.

Penn State has “White Outs.” Iowa stripes their stadium. Could Notre Dame football pull off a “Green Out” for the season opener against Michigan? I think so.

The Shirt ND (@theshirtND) on Twitter is hoping to make it a reality.

Another account seems to like the idea, and their tweet is gaining momentum as we speak:

Grassroots movements are normally hard to pull off, but I think this one has some legs — not to mention how much sense it makes.

We’ve seen Notre Dame stadium be taken over by the colors of visiting teams over the years. It’s a sad, demoralizing site for Irish faithful to see.

As far as playing Michigan goes, you really don’t need to worry about opposing colors washing out Notre Dame’s. Michigan’s maize and blue is close enough to Notre Dame’s blue and gold that it shouldn’t be an issue.

But how great would it be to see a significant portion of Notre Dame stadium decked out in Irish green for the opener against the hated rivals from the North? It would certainly remind both the visiting team and its fans wear they are and whose house it is.

And we know how much Michigan fans hate the color green. Bonus!

Having a “Green Out” for the home opener would also help boost sales of “The Shirt” before the academic year begins. That extra green would go a long way in assisting the both the charities and the organizations tied to the sales.

That said, any green piece of clothing will do. It doesn’t need to be “The Shirt.”

There are some fans and even some Notre Dame websites who don’t like the idea, mostly because they don’t think everyone will follow through.

We believe. Twitter may not reach the masses, but our site certainly does — and that’s what we’re aiming to do here.
