Notre Dame Football Recruiting: Irish Add Another to “Tight End U!”
By Carlee North
Tight End U! Notre Dame football lands 2020 Tight End Michael Mayer out of Kentucky.
Michael Mayer was last on campus June 9th for a visit and yesterday he decided Notre Dame is where he wanted to continue his football and academic career. This seemed for a while like a Notre Dame-Ohio State battle brewing with a lot of positive buzz around both programs. Brian Kelly and the Notre Dame football program knew 100 percent knew who they wanted in this 2020 class as the second tight end commitment, and Mayer their choice.
The Irish now have two of the top tight end commits in the class with Mayer joining Kevin Bauman. “TEU” is alive and well folks.
At the moment, Mayer holds 16 offers heading into his junior season from some elite programs. Georgia, Texas and Alabama are a few he already snagged offers from. The Irish got a really good one.
What will Mayer bring to Notre Dame?
The 6-5, 250 pounder is a matchup nightmare. He has every physical trait you want when you think of a prototypical tight end. He has great size to go along with outstanding hands and good speed to give the defense fits.
You can view his highlights HERE.
In high school, Mayer plays on both sides of the ball, which usually tends to be the case for top recruits acrossed the country because of their athleticism. Because of that though, he is also very physically and would be just has successful putting his hand in the dirt and getting a key block on the line as he would stretching out the defense down the middle of the field.
He is the perfect compliment to already committed tight end Kevin Bauman. This duo is pretty similar to Notre Dame sophomore tight ends Cole Kmet and Brock Wright.
Offensive coordinator Chip Long stayed on top of Mayer for quite awhile. He was a huge priority for the staff and it all worked out for the Irish! That makes three commitments for Notre Dame in the 2020 class — all on the offensive side of the ball.
Mayer joins quarterback Drew Pyne and tight end Kevin Bauman to the hot start for #IrishBouNDXX.
