The voting is open for the annual ESPY awards, and your Notre Dame Women’s Basketball team needs your help!

Love’em or hate’em, award shows are entertaining. In the case of the ESPYs, they can be another marketing tool for a college athletic program — even one as prestigious as the Notre Dame women’s basketball team.

The Irish women are currently nominated in three categories.

They are nominated for “Best Team” in what will be a heated race. They are up against the Houston Astros, Philadelphia Eagles, US Women’s Hockey Team, Villanova Men’s Basketball and the Golden State Warriors.

That, my friends, is a category of champions.

They are also nominated for “Best Moment”, thanks to the buzzer-beater by Arike Ogunbowale to defeat Mississippi State in the National Champions game.

In that category, they are up against the Minnesota Vikings win over the Saints in the NFL Playoffs, the Vegas Golden Knights advancing to the Stanley Cup Finals and 16-seed UMBC’s upset of 1-seed Virginia in the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament.

The women are also nominated for “Best Play”, thanks once again to Ogunbowale’s buzzer-beater.

In that category, they face off with the Eagles fourth-down trick play in the Super Bowl, Jessie Warren’s double play for Florida State softball and Blake Peters’ 80-foot buzzer beater for Evanston High School.

You could make the argument that Ogunbowale could have been nominated for best breakthrough athlete or even best college athlete. That said and looking at the other nominees in those categories, it’s not hard to make the case against it, either.
