Green out? Gameday? It’s been a long time since we’ve been able to get this excited about a Notre Dame football home opener!

Saturday night, ESPN officially announced that College GameDay would be heading to South Bend during Week 1 for Michigan vs. Notre Dame Football game.

About a week ago, there was some buzz from the Notre Dame Barstool account that it was going to happen, but nothing was confirmed until Saturday. ESPN made the announcement on Twitter with a video that included a throwback to the first ever College GameDay at Notre Dame when Florida State came to town.

As for Michigan and Notre Dame, they are both considered College Football Playoff contenders in 2018, with Notre Dame checking in at No. 11 and Michigan at No. 14 in the preseason Amway Coaches Poll.

As for the other contenders South Bend was up against, it most likely came down to No. 6 Washington vs. No. 10 Auburn. Seeing how that game will be played at a neutral sight in Atlanta, it was fair to say it was a no-brainer to head to arguably college football’s most historic campus.

The last time the Irish faced off with the Wolverines was in 2014 at Notre Dame Stadium, where the Notre Dame goose-egged Michigan in a huge 31-0 victory. That was supposed to be the last match up for quite some time with the series being cancelled.

But things got worked out with scheduling and the universities agreed to bring it back for a home and home for the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

As for the all-time record in the matchup, Michigan leads 24-17-1 out of the 42 meetings. This Week 1 game will be a huge boost for both of these programs and will surely help guide the winner to a much better shot at the College Football Playoff.
