Freshman point guard Prentiss Hubb has been cleared for “full practice” by the Notre Dame basketball staff.

Coach Mike Brey received great news today as freshman point guard Prentiss Hubb was cleared for Notre Dame basketball activities.

Hubb – a four star recruit out of Washington D.C — figures to be one of what could be a couple of  impact freshman for the Irish in the 2018-19 season. He was ranked 87th overall in his class, which was no doubt directly impacted by him missing his entire senior season in high school due to knee surgery.

Hubb is a player I expect to outplay his ranking.

Notre Dame will benefit from Hubb’s presence mostly due to his ability to run a pick and roll offense. While listed as a combo guard, Prentiss has high-end point guard potential, allowing star guard Temple Gibbs to play primarily off the ball.

Hubb’s absense was notable in the recent trip to the Bahamas, as Notre Dame’s offense struggled with both assists and turnovers. The Irish logged 68 assists and 45 turnovers in three games in the Bahamas. That equates to 1.51 assists per turnover on the trip.

Not great when you consider the competition.

Hubb possesses a silky smooth left handed jumper as well as ability to get by his one-on-one defender and cause havoc for opposing defenses. This ability should create dribble drive and kick opportunities for Temple Gibbs, Rex Pfleuger, Nate Laszewski, John Mooney and possibly Dane Goodwin.

All in all there is nothing bad about this situation. The Irish played well in the Bahamas for the most part. With a young, inexperienced team, depth will be paramount. Hubb’s availability will allow fellow freshman Dane Goodwin to be broken in slowly while allowing him to possibly play off the ball, as Coach Brey appears to favor Gibbs to play on the ball.

Goodwin may just be the sniper that Notre Dame needs.

Bottom line: Notre Dame basketball just received some fantastic news and the season is looking up before the Irish ever even take the court.
