Dexter Williams will earn the status of leading rusher

It is time. The long-awaited return of Dexter Williams is expected to happen this Saturday. After being suspended (that’s what we’ll call it, even though Kelly never labeled it) for the first four games, Williams is ready to go.

Armstrong and Jones Jr. have been what the Irish needed so far, but Williams can take it to the next level.

Last season, William was in the shadow of Josh Adams. Honestly, who wasn’t? But we got a glimpse of what the running back was able to produce. With only 39 carries, he came away with 360 yards and 9.2 yards per carry.

Even during the spring Blue and Gold game, he looked impressive. Easily able to get away from the line, Williams exploded for a 72-yard run in the third quarter. He ended the game with 117 yards and a touchdown.

He is an explosive back with a lot of speed.

Kelly has said that Williams would contribute this week — the question is “how much?”

William’s has made it clear on his social media that he has been ready to go. Eager to make an impact with however many snaps he is in for, William’s has a chance to earn his status as the team’s lead back.

Any type of motivation should translate well with his explosive style of play.

While Armstrong and Jones have provided much production for the Irish, there has been inconsistency. One will have a big game one week, while the other picks up the slack in the next game.

Williams might be able to be that consistent back. At the very least, he provides another weapon for the Irish.
