Notre Dame football escaped a dogfight with the upstart Pitt Panthers on Saturday, thanks to a clutch play from Miles Boykin.

This past weekend demonstrated the volatility of college football to a tee. On any given Saturday, anyone can beat anyone (aside from maybe Alabama). But Saturday afternoon, Notre Dame football had the biggest scare of the season to date, with a come from behind victory over the Pitt Panthers, 19-14.

Defensively, the unit was stout the entire game — aside from the first drive — and really kept the Irish in this one.

Offensively, I don’t really know how to explain it. It was just one of those Notre Dame games that made you scratch your head. A few interceptions were thrown, play calling was on and off, luck didn’t seem on their side and they were put in bad situations almost all game.

Ian Book still somehow completed 80 percent of his passes, which doesn’t mean much considering the offense was only able to stir up 19 total points.

In the end, the offense did have a huge drive to save the season and take the lead late in the 4th quarter. I could just say Ian Book was the player of the game when you look at his stats, but he honestly just wasn’t himself for a good part of the contest — which put the Irish in a bad spot.

The guy who made the catch of the game though was Miles Boykin. It was a game-winning 35-yard touchdown catch and a tremendous all around play from both the quarterback and the receiver.

Boykin made clutch catches all day (four catches, 84 yards) when needed. That is why he is this week’s Slap the Sign offensive player of the game.

dark. Next. Love was Unsung Hero vs. Pitt

A win is a win and now the Irish get a much needed break before heading to San Diego to take on Navy in two weeks. The offense has to buckle up and improve. They can’t have an outing like they did Saturday the rest of the way. If they want to stay in the playoff hunt, there’s no more room for mistakes. But for now, I’d say 7-0 sounds pretty darn sweet heading into the bye week!
