Notre Dame football used a stat-sheet-stuffing performance by Alohi Gilman to shut down the Seminoles and remain undefeated on the season.

Often overlooked by the likes of Julian Love and Troy Pride Jr. in the Notre Dame football secondary, Alohi Gilman has been a truly great addition to the Notre Dame defense this season and that was shown Saturday night. He was constantly disrupting the Florida State offense and never let them get a true rhythm.

On the night, the Navy transfer racked up 10 tackles (6 solo), 1 pass defended, 1 tackle for loss, and, what really stuck out to me, 2 quarterback hurries. Gilman has shown the immense ability to put pressure on the quarterback throughout his career at both Navy and Notre Dame from the safety position–not something every safety can do.

In fact, the moment that stuck out the most to me from Gilman on Saturday night was his huge hit on Florida State quarterback Deondre Francois late in the second half that had Francois struggling to get back to his feet. Gilman sprinted from his safety position straight through the Florida State offensive line and leveled Francois, forcing an errant pass.

Alohi Gilman has been one of the best transfer players Notre Dame has picked up in recent years and he has really proved his worth in this squad. A junior, Gilman will most likely return next season to a very young Notre Dame defense that he, along with (hopefully) Julian Love, will lead in the 2019 season. However, there is a very good chance that Love, who is projected to be a 1st or 2nd round pick if he should choose to forgo his senior season, will leave for the NFL.

While Love does strike me as the type of kid that would want to stay and get his degree, it would be tough to blame him for leaving. That leaves Gilman and potentially only 2 or 3 other starters from this 2018 Notre Dame defense for next season. Gilman’s impact has been strongly felt this season, and may be felt even stronger next season. Notre Dame fans get used to this guy–he is a stud.
