The nightmare continues for Notre Dame. The Irish once again were unable to close out a tight game, falling to Georgia Tech 63-61.

Initially, the game looked like it was played between two bottom feeders of a non-power five conference. Notre Dame started out shooting one-of-eight from the field. There was only one reason why the game didn’t get out of hand after that – Georgia Tech couldn’t hit a shot either.

Miss after miss and turnover after turnover, the game started to look more like a bad AAU game rather than one between two ACC teams.

Just as most teams do, both were able to work out the kinks as the game went along. As the Irish continued to play from behind, Nate Laszewski put together a stretch of eight straight points and made an impact on the defensive end.

In a season that’s been less than predictable, two things continue to stand firm for Notre Dame: A freshman will step up and John Mooney will be John Mooney.

It doesn’t seem to matter what the matchup is, Mooney will still dominate. He was able to post his 11th double-double of the season with 14-points and 10-rebounds in the first half.

To start the second half, Notre Dame was in it. Their halftime lead was protected for the first couple of minutes, but as the game went along, the impact of the Irish mistakes amplified.

Nothing bounced Notre Dame’s way and the frustration set in. With a reach-in call against the Irish called from the ref across the court, Mike Brey showed his frustration and a technical foul followed.

But just as the game seemed to be out of hand, Notre Dame put together one more run. Laszewski strung together another six straight points. As Temple Gibbs put up two free throws, it was a two-point game with ten seconds left.

Time management at the end of the game was just a footnote of how things worked out for the Irish. Another poor shooting night of 32-percent would drop Notre Dame to 1-5 in the ACC as the season begins to slip away.
