Looking Ahead at Future Notre Dame Football Schedules
After a few recent announcements surrounding Notre Dame football’s future schedules, I figured it would be a great opportunity to look ahead at opponents and playing venues in the coming years.
One of the big draws of Notre Dame football is that they aren’t tied down by a conference schedule — for the most part. The Irish have an agreement to play 4-6 ACC teams per year through 2037, with a roughly 3-year rotation of home-home series which began in 2014. Outside of this, Notre Dame has relative freedom to play teams across the country in unique stadiums and neutral fields.
Recently Notre Dame announced two changes to their schedules for 2020, 2022 and 2024. In 2020 and 2024, the Irish will travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech at Mercedes-Benz Stadium — the home of the Atlanta Falcons.
With this move to Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Notre Dame will play an incredible five games in 2020 in NFL stadiums:
- vs Wake Forest at Bank of America Stadium (home of the Carolina Panthers)
- vs Wisconsin at Lambeau Field (home of the Green Bay Packers)
- vs Pittsburgh at Heinz Field (home of the Pittsburgh Steelers)
- vs Georgia Tech at Mercedes-Benz Stadium (home of the Atlanta Falcons)
- vs USC at the L.A. Coliseum (currently home of the L.A. Rams)
On top of this inane schedule, the Irish will also kick-off the season vs Navy playing in Dublin, Ireland. It’s hard to deny the national and international draw of Notre Dame. Their brand is one of the most unique in all of college football and their schedule reflects that.
Outside of this venue change with the future Georgia Tech series, Notre Dame also added a home game with Marshall to their 2022 schedule. The matchup on September 10, 2022 will be the first ever meeting between the two schools on the gridiron.
Though a smaller Conference USA school, Marshall has had decent success in recent years. Head coach Doc Holliday is entering his 10th season at Marshall with a 70-46 record. In 2014, the Thundering Herd finished 13-1 and No. 23 in the AP poll and since 2009 own a seven-game winning streak in bowl games.
This matchup will be the home opener for the Irish in 2022, which will be the senior year for the current slate of freshman on campus.
With the addition of Marshall to the future schedule, I thought it would be a good time to revisit some other notable opponents the Irish are set to play down the road.
It’s already understood that Notre Dame will play a handful of ACC teams every year, but there are still a few future matchups worth mentioning. We’ll also look at future games with Big 10 and SEC schools.
