The former top-50 recruit has struggled with injuries in his Notre Dame basketball career and has decided he may move on from the program.

Notre Dame basketball insider Tom Noie has been dropping cryptic tweets since the end of this past season. Today he finally released some pertinent information regarding the men’s basketball team.

In Noie’s tweet, he stated that DJ Harvey will enter his name into the transfer portal but he is not closing the door on a return to Notre Dame.

Harvey represents the second transfer from the ND team in less than a year and the third in recent memory. Former team captain Elijah Burns transferred from Notre Dame shortly after the 2018-19 season began and former sharpshooter Matt Ryan transferred to Vanderbilt from Notre Dame in 2016-17.

Having guys leave the program on a consistent basis is not a great look for Mike Brey, especially as it leaves his now junior class at just one player left — Juwan Durham. Morgan hardly counts really, as he transferred to Notre Dame from UConn back in 2017.

Assuming Harvey ends up leaving Notre Dame as it appears he may, it leaves Notre Dame with a depleted roster. There is no doubt that Brey and Co. will add a few pieces before the start of next season, but at the moment this is what the current Notre Dame basketball roster looks like:

4 years eligibility: Robby Carmody

3 years eligibility: Prentiss Hubb, Nate Laszewski, Dane Goodwin, Chris Doherty

2 years: Juwan Durham, Nikola Djogo

1 year eligibility: John Mooney, TJ Gibbs, Rex Pflueger

Notre Dame has made it clear that it is looking to add a few pieces and after breaking down the current roster, a few pieces will be needed in order to compete. Notre Dame finished 14-19 on the season, 3-15 in the league, good for last in the ACC.

The Irish have two scholarships to offer at the moment, which turns into three if Harvey ends up deciding to leave. This gives them the option to add a traditional transfer, a grad transfer, or possibly pick-up an under the radar high school senior.

It is impossible to know at the moment exactly what Harvey is going to do. There are a lot of variables that will factor into Harvey’s final decision and his choice may not be final for quite a while.

Harvey came into Notre Dame from DeMatha as one of the better recruits Notre Dame had landed  in recent years. Originally a Top-50 recruit, Harvey started in his firsts season with the Irish in 2017 before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

It was clear that while Harvey could play this season, he was not 100%. Harvey took his offseason recovery very seriously, but the injury he suffered was a legit one and not one that guys always come back from. He had micro-fracture knee surgery late in 2017, which comes with a 9-month recovery process.

Harvey was lacking the explosiveness he showed in his freshman year and it was clear he was not nearly as confident in his game this season.

Whether Harvey stays or leaves Notre Dame, everyone wants the best for him as he has been a great servant to the Notre Dame basketball career and continued the strong DeMatha pipeline.
