For years, rumors have swirled about Urban Meyer being the head coach of the Notre Dame football team. Has that ship finally completely sailed?

For years, Urban Meyer has been linked to the Notre Dame football head coaching job. After coaching the Notre Dame wide receivers from 1996 to 2000, Meyer mentioned the Notre Dame job as his “dream job” in interviews. Ever since, Notre Dame fans have daydreamed about having Meyer as the head coach who brings the Irish to the top of the college football world.

Meyer “retired” from coaching after Ohio State’s Rose Bowl win in January and has since taken a job in broadcasting for Fox. Meyer has said that he doesn’t think he will coach again, citing health concerns and the stress caused by being a college head coach. Sound familiar?

ESPN’s Wright Thompson, author of The Cost of These Dreams: Sports Stories and Other Serious Business, joined the Ken Carman on 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland to discuss the new book. Thompson profiles sports personalities such as Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, and Urban Meyer.

In his interview, Thompson confidently asserts that he believes that Meyer will coach again someday. You can listen to the full 15-minute interview here.

If Meyer does again enter the coaching ranks, the rumors of his interest in Notre Dame will undoubtedly be revisited.

Brian Kelly seems to have the the program moving steadily in the right direction at the current moment, but Notre Dame fans know that much can change in a short amount of time. If, following yet another blowout loss in a major bowl game, the Irish put together a clunker of a season in 2019, it’s not unreasonable to suggest that Kelly could be gone by 2020.

This time around, though, there is a major difference in the circumstances surrounding Meyer getting to South Bend. Part of Meyer’s departure certainly has to do with the controversy surrounding his handling of an unruly assistant coach that made headlines last summer and resulted in Meyer begin suspended for the first three games of 2018.

The sketchy ending to Meyer’s tenure at Ohio State might be enough for Notre Dame to avoid contact with Meyer altogether. That aside, it is likely that he rumors of Meyer to Notre Dame aren’t completely gone forever.
