The Best Notre Dame Football Player Taken In Each Round of the NFL Draft
Round 5: Living Like Larry
I’ll be honest, it was difficult to find a Notre Dame player who put together a solid NFL career that was taken in the fifth round. When I stumbled across Larry Moriarty, I had never heard of him. He put together a rather mediocre career with the Irish, posting 892 total yards and 10 touchdowns in his three seasons in South Bend.
However, in the 1983 draft, the Houston Oilers selected Moriarty in the fifth round with the 114th overall pick. He played four seasons with the Oilers and three with the Chiefs, setting a career-high in rushing yards (785) and rushing touchdowns (6) in 1984.
His final career stat sheet wasn’t eye popping, but it was respectable for a late round draft pick that played for seven seasons.
- Rushing Attempts: 500
- Rushing Yards: 1,908
- Average: 3.8
- Rushing Touchdowns: 13
- Receptions: 77
- Receiving Yards: 494
- Receiving Touchdowns: 2
Interesting side note, Notre Dame has not had a player selected in the fifth round of the draft since 2012, when Robert Blanton and Darius Fleming were both taken.
