Notre Dame Football: Julian Love finds a perfect home with the Giants
By Ben Belden
After three seasons in South Bend, former Notre Dame football star Julian Love was drafted by the Giants with the 108th overall selection in the NFL Draft.
Julian Love seems like he will fit just fine in his new home after being selected by the New York Giants in the NFL Draft. The former Notre Dame football star cornerback had a slight slide in the draft, but ultimately went to a situation that will give Love plenty of opportunity to play early.
The Giants made waves at the beginning of the draft, selecting quarterback Daniel Jones with the 6th overall selection. The move had many Giants fans scratching their heads.
The Giants were active in the rest of the round, selected Clemson’s defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence and then trading back in to the first round to select Georgia cornerback Deandre Baker at 30th overall.
In short, the Giants needed help on the defensive side of the football, and Julian Love will be a great fit in the role the Giants would like him to fill.
What made Love a tremendous pick for the Giants is his versatility. While Love primarily played the boundary corner at Notre Dame, he was able to move inside in certain nickel situations to cover slot receivers. His tackling ability as a corner was a big reason the coaching staff at Notre Dame was comfortable playing Love closer to the line of scrimmage. It’s likely that Love fills more of a nickel role with the Giants moving forward.
Giants Head Coach Pat Shurmer discussed the acquisition of Love and reiterated the fact that Love is a unique talent at the cornerback position: Julian Love is a really, really good football player. He can play in the slot. He can play high. He’s got that tweener kind of corner safety ability, which makes him a unique player for us.”
There has been some speculation that Love may be a better safety than corner, and if the Giants feel that way, Love might make that switch. For now, though, it seems Love has found a home filling a need the Giants desperately needed.
