The Winner: Men’s Soccer Outlasts Michigan in Shootout

This might be a surprise, but there are a few reasons why this nominee was awarded this prestigious title.

First, it met both of the initial criteria.

Second, it was in the postseason with a trip to the Round of 16 on the line – so the stakes were high to begin with.

Third, with it being such a defensive battle, any goal over the first 110 minutes would have most likely been the dagger, and both teams stood firm and played suffocating defense. We’re all used to scoring and a lot of points, but a defensive battle like that is truly entertaining in itself.

Fourth, penalty kicks are some of the most exciting and thrilling moments in all of sports, and to go twelve rounds, including matching saves in the sixth round, is just ridiculous. That’s twelve straight rounds of nail-biting and pure entertainment.

Lastly, it was a victory over Michigan. #GoIrish
