Notre Dame Fighting Irish Slappy Awards: Coach of the Year
Muffet McGraw, Women’s Basketball
On the flip side from football, the women’s basketball team entered the 2018-19 season with all the expectations in the world.
Coming off an incredible National Championship win, the Irish returned one of the best starting fives in Notre Dame women’s OR men’s basketball history.
Lead by 2018 Tournament hero Arike Ogunbowale and surrounded by other Notre Dame greats Jackie Young, Brianna Turner, Jessica Shepherd and Marina Mabrey, the Irish finished the season 35-4.
Notre Dame won the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship and had victories over marquee programs like Tennessee, Texas A&M, Stanford and UConn. With a target on their back the whole season, the Irish were able to live up to expectations, despite facing plenty of adversity throughout the season. The run that the Notre Dame women’s basketball team put together over the past two seasons was truly legendary.
The Irish saw all five starters get drafted in the WNBA Draft, which is a testament to McGraw’s recruiting and the development of players. To sum it up, it has been a magnificent coaching job by Notre Dame’s longest tenured head coach.
Although Notre Dame lost in the Championship game, it was a thrilling one point loss and was yet another great season in the career of Muffet McGraw.
