Notre Dame Fighting Irish Slappy Awards: Coach of the Year
Kevin Corrigan, Men’s Lacrosse
A team that was much better than their record showed, the men’s lacrosse team was an exciting watch in every game they played. Despite not quite living up to expectations, the Irish put together a season that made players, coaches, and fans proud.
The team only went 9-7, but with an incredible comeback overtime win against Maryland and victories over the likes of Syracuse, North Carolina and Duke, the Irish proved they can still play big time lacrosse.
Losing an early season game to Richmond that they shouldn’t have greatly reduced expectations, but the Irish were in almost every game they played. A tough loss to Virginia where they lead 10-5 was a damper, but 4 of their 7 losses were either in overtime or games their comeback attempt came up just short and losing by two goals or less.
They upset Duke in the ACC Championship Tournament, but a dominant Virginia performance ended their title hopes.
They did enough to earn a home game in the first round of the tournament, beating Johns Hopkins 16-9, but lost an absolute heartbreaker to Duke in overtime, when the Blue Devils scored a sudden death goal on a shot with just one second remaining on the shot clock.
