Rising sophomore Jordan Nixon has been named to the USA Basketball under 19 team for the 2019 World Cup. The tournament begins July 20.

After an injury ridden freshman season, Jordan Nixon is already pushing herself in the right direction to be one of the star players for the upcoming season. This weekend, Nixon, a rising sophomore on the Notre Dame Women’s basketball team, was named to the USA Basketball under 19 World Cup team. The team will travel to Bangkok, Thailand this summer to take on the world’s best.

Abby Prohaska was also in consideration for the team, but did not make the final roster. Nixon is one of twelve players who will be a part of the roster, joining four other rising sophomores who played division one basketball last season. The rest of the roster is comprised of some of the top talent in the high school ranks.

This will be a very good opportunity for Nixon heading into her sophomore year. After beginning the year in the starting lineup, players returning from injury and injuries of her own forced Nixon to the bench. She struggled to get back into the mix towards the end and rarely was the first choice freshman guard. But with all five starters from last year off in the WNBA, it is very important that players like Nixon and Prohaska step up.

Nixon will be the starter at the point guard spot barring anything drastic. One thing that was a big issue for Nixon in her first year was her ball security. As a point guard, it is important to protect the ball. That is one of the biggest areas that Nixon must improve on, but that will most likely come with more experience. This will pit her against some of the top talent in the world at her age level so it will be a prime place to get better.

The US will head to training camp in Colorado Springs July 5-10 before heading over to Asia for a pre-tournament tune up against Japan in Tokyo. They will then travel to Bangkok for two more friendlies against Germany and Argentina. The tournament will tip off on July 20. In Group C with the US is Australia, South Korea, and Hungary. The tournament will conclude on July 28 with the gold medal game.
