Notre Dame football has plenty of legendary players, which got me wondering: Which Irish legends, in their prime, would be the best fit for this 2019 team?

A program with the rich tradition such as Notre Dame football is naturally going to have plenty of legendary players. After all, Notre Dame has produced 7 Heisman trophy winners and 531 NFL Draft picks in its history. Those like Joe Montana, Jerome Bettis, and many many more became household names.

In the spirit of remembering some of the Notre Dame greats, I got to thinking about which of those greats would fit best with this Notre Dame roster. Obviously a lot goes in to this exercise: Team needs and style of play are two of the most important criteria for deciding whether the legend would be a fit.

Obviously, the assumption here in this hypothetical would be that a time machine or a fountain of youth would send this player back to his college prime to suit up for the Irish. Also, it’s worth mentioning that we’re talking about inserting the player as he was when he was at Notre Dame and not mentioning what happened to him after he left South Bend.

For example, a player such as Brady Quinn would be a good example: Quinn was a terrific college quarterback, but didn’t have great success in the NFL. For this exercise, we’d be interested in discussing Brady Quinn as a college player and a college player only.

Now, Quinn isn’t the best example because he doesn’t currently fill a position of need. In short, I’m looking at players who would help Notre Dame’s margins the most. What player would fill the biggest void on Notre Dame’s 2019 roster? Here are three of the best candidates I could come up with:
