The college football season is right around the corner. While Notre Dame football Saturdays are best in South Bend, it’s always fun to take a trip to away games.

One of the things that makes college football better than the NFL is tradition. Some of the best college football traditions range from the touching of Howard’s Rock, to Nebraska’s balloon release, to the donning of Chief Osceola, to slapping the Play Like a Champion Today sign. The NFL really doesn’t have traditions like that.

The NFL also lacks the pageantry of college football. While a few teams like the Washington Redskins have a fight song, it’s not a universal tradition. There’s certainly nothing like the Ohio State marching band, the Notre Dame Victory March, or even UCF’s Zombie Nation.

Furthermore, the atmosphere around tailgates is better in college.  In the NFL it often seems like you tailgate at a shopping mall. Patriot Place, for instance, is a shopping and dining complex owned by Kraft where fans hang out instead of tailgating. In college, you have atmospheres like The Grove at Ole Miss. When you think of a tailgate, you think of the tents, flags, and signs.

Of course, South Bend in the fall is unmatched, but across college football, there are tons of amazing colleges to visit for a football game. This combines the atmosphere and tradition before and during the game.

Notre Dame has five road games in 2019. All of them have different traditions and atmospheres. A few of them are truly excellent, and are worth making a road trip from South Bend to go see. None of them are more worth going to, than a game in South Bend, if it’s one or the other. For a college football fan, they’re still worth seeing, though.

Here are the top three road trip games for Notre Dame in 2019:
