Notre Dame football is one of the top programs in the history of college football. Let’s talk about the coaches who helped it get there.

Before we get into the all-time top five coaches let’s talk about the criteria used for ranking them.

The criteria used to rank these coaches includes:

  • Win Percentage
  • Consensus All-Americans while at Notre Dame
  • National Titles
  • NFL Draft Picks
  • Length of Tenure

While there are other possible categories, these were the five I believe were best suitable and most impactful when considering the question at hand. Categories were chosen based on if they could fit with every coach, with the exception of “NFL Draft Picks” which didn’t fit for one coach.

Each of the coaches were ranked 1-5 — unless there was a tie for last, then it would be 1-4 — for each category. The scores from each category were added up and divided by five (the number of categories) to find their composite score. The lower the score, the better.

When ranking each coach, their outcome for each individual category will be listed and then there will be a breakdown of each coach. In the breakdown, their placements for each category will be mentioned, as well as some reasoning behind it. Lastly, at the end of each section, will be the coaches average score and a quick explanation.

So now that, that is out of the way, who are the all-time top five coaches at Notre Dame?
