No. 5: 2011 vs. Maryland (FedEx Field, Landover, MD)

This is easily the most controversial selection on this list, but hear me out. These uniforms don’t look like anything special, but they played a vital role in the evolution of this series.

These were the first unique alternate uniforms that the Irish wore. In the previous two Shamrock Series games, the Irish wore their normal navy uniforms and their common alternate green uniforms.

Those same green uniforms were worn in the 2011 game, but the equipment staff got the chance to experiment with some new-look helmets.

They used a brighter gold paint and created a wave effect when applying it. On each side of the helmet, they added a large green shamrock decal.

The color of the helmet didn’t exactly match the other color accents in the uniform, but I think we can cut them some slack.

This was the first display of creativity in this series. It was new for a tradition-rich program like Notre Dame, and, as you might guess, rubbed some people the wrong way. However, it helped turn this series into what it is today.
