Head coach Brian Kelly and Notre Dame football got more good news on Friday.

Notre Dame football landed one of nation’s top 2021 tight ends on Friday evening in Cane Berrong. The Georgia product was last on campus for an unofficial at the beginning of June for the Irish invasion camp.

He impressed the staff during workouts and clearly the visit had a major impression on him and his family.

Being able to talk and form relationships with the coaches and players was big for Berrong. There was no need to wait any longer to pull the trigger and make it official. He had fallen in love with Notre Dame and wanted to officially be Irish.

At the moment, Berrong holds 25 offers. including those from Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Ohio State.

What will Berrong bring to South Bend?

The 6’5″, 220-pound tight end has all the traits you want. He has the length, size, speed and hands for a tight end that you look for. Adding to that, Berrong is a multi-sport athlete — playing basketball, baseball and track — so he clearly has great athleticism.

He’s one of the better pass-catching tight ends in the country for 2021 and will go up and snag any ball that comes his way. He adjusts really well in the air for his size and majority of the time seems to always win jump balls. If he gets in open space, watch out. He has a sneaky quickness to him, and is tough to bring down. He’s a mismatch waiting to happen in the Irish offense and it will almost be unfair for any opponent he’s up against.

Also, usually younger tight ends thrive in one area, whether that’s catching or blocking, but Berrong can do both pretty efficiently for being fairly new to the tight end position. He’s well-rounded as an in-line blocking tight end and isn’t afraid to get physical at times.

That said, he still has a ton to learn for his age.

He’s an all-around player who’s already made a splash around the country with really good testing numbers at camps and on film. He still has two years left in high school, so a lot can change, but I expect it all to be massive improvements for one of the most highly touted players in the country.

If Berrong continues growing physically, gets stronger, and completely focuses on learning the tight end position, all bets are off. I could see him easily solidify his spot as a top player in country when the final 2021 rankings come out for the recruiting sites.

With Berrong’s commitment, the 2021 class now has five commits, including offensive linemen Blake Fisher and Greg Crippen, quarterback Tyler Buchner and defensive lineman Gabriel Rubio.

I personally think it would be smart if Berrong was the only tight end taken for this cycle after landing the top two tight ends in the 2020 class (Michael Mayer and Kevin Bauman).

A lot of things can change in the next year, so we’ll just have to wait and see if a second tight end will be something the staff wants for this class.

I can’t begin to tell you how impressive and outstanding the start is to the 2021 class and it’s crazy to think it doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon at all. This staff is getting after it like I’ve never seen and it’s truly so much fun to watch. As for Berrong to Notre Dame, “TEU” is continuing on!
