Notre Dame Football: Irish record vs. every Big 12 team

Here is how Notre Dame football has fared against the Big 12 conference teams historically.

Notre Dame football has a history of barnstorming the nation to play anyone and everyone. Surprisingly however, the Fighting Irish have only played a grand total of 36 games against current Big 12 teams.

Here is how Notre Dame football did in those games.

Texas

The Irish have met up with the Longhorns a total of 12 times. Notre Dame leads that series 9-3. The last matchup was the famous “Texas is back” game in Austin in 2016.

Oklahoma

Notre Dame has tangled with the Sooners 11 times. The Irish lead that series 9-2. They last met in Norman in 2013, where the Irish were victorious en route to an undefeated season and an appearance in the BCS National Championship Game.

Kansas

The Kansas Jayhawks have faced Notre Dame six times. The Irish lead that series 4-1-1.

West Virginia

The Mountaineers and Irish have battled four times through history. Notre Dame has a 4-0 advantage. The first meeting was n the 1989 Fiesta Bowl, when No. 1 Notre Dame took down the No. 3 Mountaineers to win the national championship.

Baylor

Baylor and Notre Dame have met only twice, with the Irish winning both matchups.

Texas Christian

TCU and Notre Dame played once in 1972, with Notre Dame coming away victorious, 21-0.

That’s a short list of only six teams, which leads me to a trivia question you can use with friends or at your local watering hole:

Who are the four current Big 12 teams who have never played Notre Dame? Iowa State, Kansas State, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.

Of that group, only Oklahoma State surprises me. The other three were never consistently relevant. Now, however, it would be fun to see the Irish square off with Iowa State and Matt Campbell — one of the hottest coaching names in the college game.

Additionally, it’s a little sad that Bill Snyder never got a chance to face the Fighting Irish.
