Notre Dame Football: Irish record vs. the SEC teams
By J.P. Scott
Notre Dame football has fared well against the SEC programs it has faced throughout history.
Nowadays, the SEC — and perhaps rightfully so — is looked upon as the most powerful conference in college football. Historically, however, the Notre Dame football team has had a lot of success against the boys from down south.
Here’s how Notre Dame football has fared against the SEC.
LSU
The Irish and Tigers have met 12 times. Notre Dame leads the series 7-5. The last time they played was the famous Book-to-Boykin touchdown game.
Tennessee
The Irish and Vols have played eight times, splitting those meetings down the middle, four games apiece.
Alabama
Notre Dame leads the all-time series with the Crimson Tide, 5-2. We won’t talk about what happened the last time the two programs met.
South Carolina
Notre Dame has faced the Gamecocks four times. The Irish hold a 3-1 advantage in the series.
Missouri
Mizzou and Notre Dame have played four times. The series is tied 2-2.
Vanderbilt
The Commodores and Irish have only played three times, with Notre Dame winning all three meetings. That last one was in 2018, where Vanderbilt had the Irish looking for the exits.
Ole Miss
The Irish and Rebels have split the only two meetings they’ve ever had, the last of which was in 1985.
Georgia
Notre Dame and Georgia have met only twice, the last of which was the 20-19 Bulldog win in South Bend. They’ll meet a third time in 2019.
Florida
The Fighting Irish have met the Gators only once — back in 1992 in the Sugar Bowl. Notre Dame came away with a 39-28 win.
Four SEC teams — Arkansas, Auburn, Kentucky and Mississippi State — have never played Notre Dame. Arkansas, however, is on the 2020 Notre Dame schedule. Former Irish coach Lou Holtz spent six seasons at the helm of the Razorback program. It would be nice if the two universities were able to honor him in some way during that game.
