Notre Dame football got another big commit on Wednesday.

2020 receiver Jay Brunelle out of Massachusetts has committed to Notre Dame football Wednesday afternoon. Brunelle has been to campus a few times, most recently for Irish invasion where he was looking to earn an offer from the Irish coaching staff.

Obviously he did just that with a huge performance.

He was one of the best players on campus that day, if not the best. Brunelle has tested exceptionally well over the past several months for a consensus 3-star prospect, running a 4.56 40 and having a 38.40 inch vertical during The Opening regionals in New Jersey. He actually ran hand-times in South Bend of a 4.45 and 4.48. Those times and numbers are among some of the top wide receivers in the nation when it comes to testing, which is extremely impressive. The one offer he was truly waiting for was Notre Dame and after the invasion performance, he got exactly what he wanted and earned.

Things did get a little tricky after he took an official to Michigan over the weekend, and with Notre Dame seeming to play the “wait and see” approach before giving him the definite green light to commit, it looked like an uphill battle. But after a few pieces fell and the board opened up more, the staff pushed extremely hard over the past 48 hours and landed his commitment.

Everything happens for a reason and I think Brunelle is exactly where he’s supposed to be. At the moment, Brunelle holds 15 offers, including those from UCLA, Michigan, and West Virginia.

What will Jay Brunelle bring to South Bend?

The 6’1″, 200-pound wide receiver is a natural football player. He does everything really well and is put together really nice. He has a good build and has the frame to continue filling out. He has a deceptive explosiveness that you wouldn’t expect and has nice control. He doesn’t drop many passes and seems to be a natural pass catcher who’s also a big time competitor.

He creates separation, has really good change of direction and has the ability to beat you deep. I think Brunelle could definitely thrive in South Bend, as he’s someone who you know will work very hard for the Irish.

I could see him being a full-time special teams player as well he works on his technique and learns the playbook. It doesn’t hurt that he already has a great relationship with current quarterback commit Drew Pyne. The chemistry between the two is already there from camps and it looks like it could be something positive for years to come in blue and gold.

With Brunelle‘s commitment, the Irish now have 15 pledges — nine on offense and six on defense. Brunelle will be joining elite wide receiver Jordan Johnson as the second receiver commit in the class. Look for the Irish to add one or two more before this class is all finished. For now, the combination of Johnson and Brunelle is a solid pairing. If the Irish add another quality wideout, they will be sitting really nice.
