The Notre Dame football coaching staff just got a young, new addition.

Former Miami (Ohio) RedHawks quarterback Gus Ragland is now a member of the Notre Dame football coaching staff as an offensive analyst.

The former RedHawks quarterback just graduated in 2019 following a 3rd team All MAC selection. He started 28 career games for Miami, winning 16 of those starts. He lead Miami to the St. Petersburg Bowl in 2016, coming just one point short of upsetting Mississippi State. Through his career, he threw for over 6,300 yards and 56 touchdowns.

Ragland is no stranger to Notre Dame Stadium, where he started for the RedHawks in a 52-17 loss on September 30, 2017. He went 19 of 37 for 262 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Ragland announced the move on Wednesday to WCPO.com reporter Mike Dyer, who tweeted out the news.

The former 2-star recruit went undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft. He said in an interview that after his playing career is over, he wanted to go into coaching. Now, at just 24 years old, he’s getting that chance.

At such a young age, you’d have to think Ragland will bring a different, newer perspective to the offense. His ability to make smart decisions in the red zone and subsequently protect the ball should also help some of younger quarterbacks on the roster. Throughout his career, he had 53 red zone touchdowns as opposed to only one turnover.

It should also be a help when Ragland’s old MAC West rival Bowling Green comes to town on October 5. Ragland has a 2-1 career record vs. the Falcons.

He joins Pat Kramer as an offensive assistant. If things go well, Ragland could move up the ladder quickly if Chip Long moves on after the season.

This was an under the radar and a little bit of an out of the box move, which speaks volumes about Brian Kelly’s awareness and ongoing evolution as a college football coach.
