3. George Keogan (1923 – 1943)

Overall Record: 327 – 97

Win Percentage: .771

Conference Titles: 0

All-Americans: 1

NCAA Tournament Appearances: 0

Regular Season Titles: 0

Keogan was the first out of all coaches on this list to get the opportunity to coach Men’s Basketball at Notre Dame. He boasted a tremendous record of 327-97 while at Notre Dame, which in return helped him secure the number one spot for the best win percentage (.771) out of all coaches on the list. However, coaching during the time he did didn’t help his case for top coach when it comes to this list. The NCAA Tournament began in 1939, which was close to the end of George Keogan’s coaching career.

Another fact that doesn’t help Keogan’s case was that only eight teams were originally invited to the tournament — a huge difference compared to the now 68 teams. One last thing that also hurt Keogan’s ranking — just like Dee’s/Jordan’s — was the fact that Notre Dame didn’t join a conference until the mid 1990’s.
