Louisville is planning a “Blackout” for the home opener against Notre Dame football.

Notre Dame football will travel to Louisville on Sept. 2 to take on the Cardinals in the season opener for both teams. The Irish always get the opponent’s best shot — that’s part of being a team with the historical prestige of Notre Dame.

In addition to Louisville’s best shot, Notre Dame will also be “blacked out.” It appears that the good folks at Louisville have decided that the home opener against the Irish will be a “Blackout” game. That means the Cardinals will be wearing black on the field, and their fans will be wearing black in the stands.

It should be an awesome sight.

Personally, I think it’ pretty cool that Louisville is doing this. It’s not often that a team gets to open its season at home against a program like Notre Dame. The fact that Louisville is going through all of this “hoopla” is a sign of respect to the Irish program. They wouldn’t do a blackout for a home opener against a MAC team or even a Syracuse or Duke. But this is Notre Dame — so why not?

As far as the game itself goes, I’m not sure the uniforms or the color the crowd wears will matter once the ball is kicked off. The Cardinals appear inferior to the Irish at nearly every position on the field. Toss in the fact that they are going through a coaching transition, and things are going to get pretty dicey for the home team in a hurry.

As of right now, the Vegas oddsmakers have Notre Dame favored over Louisville by about 20 points.
