When you have as many rivalries as Notre Dame football does, it’s important to win as many as you can — or maybe win them all.

There is a certain history and tradition that comes to mind when one thinks of Notre Dame football. 11 national titles. 7 Heisman trophy winners. You get the gist.

The next thing that comes to mind is Notre Dame’s extensive rivalries with big-time schools such as  USC, Stanford, and Michigan State.

Over the years, there has been a trophy adopted within each rivalry that goes home with the winner of each year’s matchup. Notre Dame currently holds all of them.

That seems to be a fact that has gone widely unnoticed and under appreciated.

For Notre Dame to hold each and every rivalry trophy means that is has beaten each of its rivals in the past year or at least recently. Holding wins over top-notch college football blue bloods is critical to holding up Notre Dame’s legacy and lore.

On top of holding up its reputation, winning against rivals also helps out substantially in recruiting. More often than not, when the Irish are targeting a big-time recruit, schools like Stanford and USC are targeting them as well. Regularly beating these teams helps to sway recruits in Notre Dame’s favor, which definitely is a reason why Notre Dame’s 2020 recruiting class is its best since 2013.
