Notre Dame Basketball Nuggets: August 2019
The latest Notre Dame Basketball News and Notes
The Men’s Basketball staff has been busy of late. Late July and early August saw many 2020 and 2021 offers go out , while it also saw some bad news with top targets announce elsewhere. On another note, a few former players signed professional contracts as they continue their basketball journey’s. Let’s take a dive into the latest Notre Dame basketball news.
Terrance Williams Picks Georgetown
Williams was arguably the top target on the Notre Dame basketball board for 2020, and if he wasn’t, he was at the very least the most realistic top target. After taking an official visit to South Bend earlier in the spring, things were looking up for the Irish, and at one point they were the perceived favorite. As time went on, the hometown Hoyas gained steam and were ultimately the team he chose.
As to where Notre Dame goes from here, multiple new offers have gone out and other targets remain on the board. There is no sugar coating the state of Men’s basketball recruiting. Even with the transfer of Cormac Ryan to Notre Dame, recruiting needs to pick up and pick up fast.
Notre Dame Offers Multiple 2020 Forwards
In a span of a few days in late July, Notre Dame offered forwards Darlinstone Dubar (Tennessee), Matt Zona (New Jersey) and Zed Key (New York). From the looks of it, Zona is likely the most realistic target of the trio of 3 stars, but time will tell if they are able to get in the mix with them.
Right now, Notre Dame is clearly Zona’s most impressive offer along with Penn State. His only other Power 5 offer is from Rutgers. Key’s offer list is actually very impressive based on his ranking, with offers from Cincinnati, Florida, Illinois, Ohio State, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin among others. Dubar’s offer list is impressive as well, but very small. His offers include those from Auburn, Marquette, Seton Hall, VCU and Wichita State.
A Trio of 2021 Indiana Prospects on ND’s Radar
Caleb Hurst, Blake Wesley and JR Konieczny were all offered by the Notre Dame staff within a week of each other. Wesley and Konieczny, both from the South Bend area, have both taken unofficial visits since the offer.
Wesley, specifically, has seen his stock take off since receiving other offers from Cincinnati, Purdue, Indiana, Illinois, Xavier and Northwestern.
From a recruiting standpoint, Hurst is the most coveted of the 3, with offers from many of the nation’s best programs. That said, he is the least likely of the 3 to end up at Notre Dame. Keep an eye on Wesley and Konieczny — Notre Dame should have a really good chance with both athletes.
Bonzie Colson and Demetrius Jackson Sign Professional Contracts
After successful Summer League performances from both, Colson and Jackson find themselves in much different spots.
Colson announced a few weeks ago that he would be signing with Darussafaka of the Turkish professional league — the same team that Luke Harangody played for a few years back. The former Irish standout should excel overseas after spending last season with with both the Bucks and their G-League team, and hopefully we will see him back in the states soon competing for an NBA roster spot.
Jackson, after spending the Summer League with the Blazers, was signed by the Lakers yesterday to an Exhibit 10 deal. This will give him a chance to make the Lakers out of training camp or be sent down to the G-League.
