Notre Dame Football: Bold predictions for each Irish opponent in 2019
Less than one week out from the full start of college football, hot takes are running wild. Here are a few for the 2019 opponents of Notre Dame football.
The light at the end of the long, dark offseason tunnel is almost here. In less than two short weeks, Notre Dame football will take the field for the first time.
We’re at the point in the off-season where trash talking seemingly has reached a peak, with fans, schools and even college football analysts themselves getting in on the action.
Part of that includes bold predictions, hot takes if you will. Some that were considered bold just 8 months ago (such as Utah winning their division) are now just accepted a very good possibilities.
Like everyone else, I, too, have some bold predictions on the season. Today, we’ll look at one of mine for each team Notre Dame football faces this season, going in order of the schedule.
Louisville: The Cardinals are better, but don’t have much to show for it:
Under Scott Satterfield, there’s no doubt Louisville will soon be, at the very least, extremely competitive once again. Unfortunately, probably not this season. Louisville plays a pretty good schedule, the the two likely wins being non-conference games against Eastern Kentucky and Western Kentucky.
Beyond that, their most winnable Power 5 games appear to be on the road, with games at Wake Forest and Kentucky. Expect the Cardinals to improve, but not much in the win column.
New Mexico: Bob Davie is fired before Thanksgiving
Davie is no stranger to Notre Dame, where his 35-25 record as head coach was highlighted by a 41-9 loss to Oregon State. Davie has had two winning records in seven years at New Mexico. He won 16 games in those two years, but just 18 in the other five seasons combined.
He’s firmly on the hot seat, and this season will be the end of the line. Exactly when depends on a tough game against San Houston State, who has made the FCS playoffs 7 of the last 8 years. Win, and Davie is safe for a little longer. Lose and Davie might not even make it to the Notre Dame game. A brutal 4-game stretch that includes Hawaii, at Nevada, Air Force and at Boise State could be the final stretch for Bob Davie at New Mexico.
