Did Notre Dame deserve to move up in the polls?
By J.P. Scott
Notre Dame moved up from No. 9 to No. 8 in both major polls this week.
As I watched the Notre Dame season opener against Louisville on Monday night, I couldn’t help but to notice the general mood of the Irish fan base on social media. Like myself, the Golden Domer faithful were less-than-impressed by what they were watching.
By the end of the night — on the scoreboard at least — things had appeared to have worked out. The spread was 18.5. The Irish won by 18. A bunch of programs around the country would have taken that result in a heartbeat.
It crossed my mind during the game that the Irish could feel the effects of a lackluster performance when the next polls come out. I was not going to be shocked to see the coaches and media drop Notre Dame a spot or two.
To my surprise, when the AP Top 25 and Amway Coaches Polls were released yesterday, Notre Dame had moved up to No. 8 in both sets of rankings. I had to check to see if I had missed an upset in the top ten somewhere. I had not.
Instead, it was Florida’s sloppy win over Miami in Week 0 that was responsible for the Irish rising up the polls. Both the AP and the coaches punished the Gators for their close, come from behind win over unranked Miami on a neutral field, dropping Florida 2-3 spots.
Honestly, watching that game, I thought the result had more to do with Miami being underrated than the Gators being overrated.
During the Notre Dame-Louisville game, I truly felt like I was watching an Irish team underperform against the expectations placed on them before the season. So again, I expected them to drop in the polls.
I want to get YOUR take.
