Ian Book throws for 300+ yards

Two games in, the commentary on Notre Dame’s quarterback hasn’t been great. There was more confidence after New Mexico, but the narrative was completely different from week one.

Questions arose about Book’s confidence post-Louisville. He looked shaky and failed to reasonably look like he did from a season ago. While he was able to put some of those concerns to rest after putting up 360-yards through the air and completing 62.5-percent of his attempts versus New Mexico, another slow start has made many question what his swagger this season.

The reality is, while things have looked shaky, the quarterback has still been consistent. Six touchdowns and zero interceptions is a stat line that no one should be complaining about.

You could easily look at the negatives and be worried about what Book might be this season, but the reasons for optimism are far greater.

The return of Cole Kmet means more options for Book in the passing game.

Javon McKinley has been in the program for a while, but never made an impact until last week. Two receptions provided his first two career touchdowns on a day that ended with 85-yards on his stat line.

Quickly he looks like a scary target that could become a tremendous weapon for Book. He also becomes someone that nobody has film on. Georgia really has no idea what McKinley brings.

Chase Claypool should also be in for an extensive game. He has been the most targeted receiver for the Irish and rightfully so. Until someone can stop him, he should be the go-to guy for Book.

This is a game that Notre Dame will have to go to the air. The running back corps has taken a hit already. That said, Georgia’s secondary has also taken a hit.

Tyson Campbell suffered a right foot injury against Arkansas State and was in a walking boot Monday. He remains questionable.

Book has attempted 47-passes so far this season. With more targets becoming available and the necessity of attacking through the air, that number could be just under becoming doubled after Saturday.

He has become more confident through two games and a lot is riding on his shoulders. Book has what it takes to stand up against the task and throw for over 300-yards.
