Notre Dame Football First Look: Virginia Cavaliers
Offense
Virginia’s offense relies heavily on the play of senior quarterback Bryce Perkins. His 843 yards through the air have provided the bulk of the Cavalier offense this season, as the team ranks 104th in rushing attempts and 95th in rushing yards.
Perkins, a second-year starter, provides dual-threat capabilities, as evidenced by his 923 rushing yards last season. While he has failed to match this kind of production on the ground this season, he nonetheless remains a threat to make a play with his legs and is Virginia’s leading rusher.
The Cavalier passing attack is supported by a trio of veteran wide receivers. Seniors Joe Reed and Hasise Dubois, along with junior Terrell Jana, make up the bulk of the production at the wide receiver position.
Two areas of major concern for the Virginia offense are turnovers and a glaring inability to protect the quarterback. Perkins has already been sacked 7 times this season and has thrown 4 interceptions against some less-than-stellar defenses. For the Cavaliers to have a chance at upsetting the Irish, they will have to drastically improve in these two areas.
