Notre Dame Football: Three bold predictions for the Irish vs. Bowling Green
By Chase Eyrich
Ian Book faces pressure
The biggest bump in Book’s progression from a season ago has been his inconsistency when forced out of the pocket. What was once a strength of his–to extend plays or make something out of nothing–has turned into what seems like a nervous player.
Although Bowling Green is not only is the weakest opponent to date, but also the weakest remaining on the schedule, they have the ability to make Book feel uncomfortable.
Will that change the outcome of the game? Not even close. But it is something that the Irish have to prepare for.
The main concern here branches from sixth-year defensive end David Konowalski. Not only does he know the program inside and out, but he has become Brian Vangorder’s favorite asset.
The Falcons pass rush has seen some immense struggles the last two years. Now, they have found a bit of a stride. It might not show up in their record, but it does on the stat sheet.
Bowling Green has accumulated 12 sacks through four games including five against Louisiana Tech. That number matches the same success that the Irish have had on defense this season and ranks both 20th in the nation for that category.
Much of that success has come from Konowalski. He is on pace to blow out every one of his statistical categories after missing last season with an Achilles injury.
Konowalski has shown no signs of slowing down and has been paired well with linebackers Brandon Perce and Kholbe Coleman.
While it won’t be a game-altering aspect, the biggest thing Notre Dame’s offense will have to overcome is the pressure that Bowling Green has been able to force on their opponents so far this season.
The biggest factor that many won’t want to admit is that Van Gorder does know Notre Dame. This is a vastly different team than it was when he was around, but he will bring valuable knowledge into this matchup.
