Notre Dame Football: Three bold predictions vs. Michigan
By Chase Eyrich
Tight ends have strong showing
If Book is going to be pressured and forced to make quick decisions, then his tight ends will quickly become his go-to weapon.
Cole Kmet already has become one of — if not already — Book’s favorite target. The 6’6” 255 lb tight end is Notre Dame’s biggest, strongest target.
He easily becomes a quick “bailout” option if Books needs to just get rid of the ball.
Kmet’s production got right back on track after a slow outing vs. Bowling Green. Versus USC, he racked up 61 yards on six receptions and one touchdown.
If Michigan does try to put pressure on the pocket, the options quickly open up for Kmet to be able to put his hands all over the game.
Two tight end sets have been one of the ways that Notre Dame has been able to find success running the ball or just providing a couple of extra seconds for Book to work through his progressions.
Not only can we expect to see that, but we should also see Kmet fake that block and release for a quick option for Book to hit.
Kmet has proven this season that he can burn you on a quick slant or straight up on a vertical route.
What’s most impressive is the strength of his hands. If the ball has made any contact with his hands, no one will be able to bat it away. This obviously also becomes a huge reason why his blocks are also so successful.
If Notre Dame is going to be able to run their offense the way they want to, they will have to counter any pressure Michigan’s defense will be able to apply. The best way to do that will be for the tight ends to make an impact on each and every play.
