The former Notre Dame linebacker has been a consistent contributor during his rookie season.

Notre Dame players are no strangers to success in the NFL. We’ve seen them have a lot of it over the years. So far in 2019, it’s hard to argue that the best Irish defensive rookie in the NFL this season has been Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Drue Tranquill.

Every week, I highlight some of the top performances by former Irish players in the NFL. In many week this season, I’ve mentioned Tranquill. He’s been a consistent, if not solid, contributor for the Chargers this season.

His stat line is one that reflects his involvement. He has logged 17 tackles on the year and defended a pass. This past weekend against the Bears, he and former Notre Dame defensive tackle Jerry Tilley combined to log seven tackles in a one-point win. That was a crucial win and helps the Chargers stay alive in what is shaping up to be a tight race in the AFC West.

If you had to bet money one which defensive rookie from Notre Dame would have the biggest impact for his team in 2019, I’m not sure many people would have placed bets on Tranquill. That makes what he’s been doing this season even more special.

Golden Tate

Also of note this season, Golden Tate looks to have returned to form following a four-game suspension to start the season. The Giants receiver has been targeted 36 times in four games since returning in 2019. He has caught 23 of those targets, which would put him on pace for a 92-catch season over 16 games. That’s in line with the 90-catch player he has been during much of his tremendous NFL career. It’s nice to see Golden Tate back in action and starring as the top receiver for the New York Giants.
