Donte Vaughn came up huge for Notre Dame football on Saturday.

What a comeback win for this team after another up and down day all together. Coming off of last week, a lot of people were curious how Notre Dame football would come out against Virginia Tech. Would they come out without any passion or much care for what happens, or would they fold when some adversity hit?

Boy, did adversity hit hard when Notre Dame was going into half probably up two scores when a fumble on the goal line swung the game completely upside down. It wasn’t pretty but somehow the Irish got it done, on offense nonetheless, to win 21-20.

The Irish defense was solid for majority of the game. They held Patterson in check on the ground and did a decent job against the pass. The cornerback play has been inconsistent to say the least so far this season, but one guy that really played his butt off was Donte Vaughn. He’s the Unsung Hero this week.

Donte Vaughn has had a tough career at Notre Dame to date with injuries, suspect play in the secondary, and just bad luck in coverage a lot of the time. On Saturday afternoon, Vaughn came out and competed hard. It was the most I’ve seen him compete in his Irish career in one game.

Vaughn had six total tackles — three being solo, and he had two pretty big pass breakups throughout the game. In no way am I saying he was perfect, because he did have a few miscues but he pushed through them and continued playing physical football in the secondary.

Also, one thing that’s been talked about throughout the season was Vaughn being a possible redshirt candidate. There were also rumors in the past couple weeks that he could grad transfer with that year left and leave Notre Dame. In the end, it looks like he and the coaching staff decided he was going to finish off strong here and be a big contributor the rest of the season.

This game on Saturday was the “4-game redshirt” threshold and he came out and showed he made the right decision to play out one last the season for the Irish. Donte Vaughn deserved the Unsung Hero against Virginia Tech.

Next. Hamilton was DPOG vs VT. dark

Next up is Duke and once again, Donte Vaughn will be leaned on in the secondary to go out and do his job for Notre Dame football.
