Contain the Navy Run Game

Well this is pretty obvious, but how the Notre Dame defense handles Navy’s triple option will be the biggest factor in the outcome of the game.

As mentioned earlier, Navy boasts the top rushing attack in the country — and that doesn’t happen on accident. They have playmakers littered throughout the offense, with the biggest threat being their quarterback, who’s accounted for 21 total touchdowns to date.

This becomes an even bigger storyline after the early-season troubles in stopping the run, linebacker inexperience, and the loss of defensive end Julian Okwara to injury. While the defense has tightened up since those early struggles, they are still very susceptible to poor run-game play, as we saw when Michigan ran for over 300 yards on them three weeks ago.

This defense doesn’t have the veteran play of Drue Tranquill, Te’von Coney, Greer Martini, Nyles Morgan, or Jerry Tillery anymore. Younger guys who might not have as much experience vs. Navy and the triple option have to step up if Notre Dame wants to continue it’s home winning streak.

It will take a collective effort from the defensive unit to contain the rushing attack as much as possible. The advantage of this type of offense is drives can be shut down early if they get behind the chains on first and second down. Force them into passing situations and the game becomes easier to manage.

If the right defense shows up, it could be a great day for Clark Lea and this unit.
