Updating the Record (Book)

Despite the inconsistent play of Ian Book this year, he’s actually put up some very impressive numbers. With still a game to play (two including the bowl game), he’s just 11 completions and 91 yards away from season-bests in both categories. Not to mention he’s tossed 10 more touchdown passes than last year already, with one less interception.

To top it off, his 508 rushing yards are almost double his previous season-high of 280. His career mark of 994 rushing yards puts him six yards away from becoming the 5th Irish quarterback all-time to break the century mark on the ground.

In terms of program passing records, Book has put himself in position to pass some all-time greats. With 52 career touchdown passes, he is currently tied with Ron Powlus for 4th most in program history. One more would give him sole possession of 4th place, and eight more over the last two games would tie Book with Jimmy Clausen for 3rd all time.

Next, Book’s 29 touchdown tosses this year is currently good enough for a tie with Everett Golson for 3rd most in a season in school history. Three more would tie Brady Quinn for second most in a season, and eight more would tie Quinn again for the most passing touchdowns by an Irish quarterback in a single season ever with 37.

The last notable stat to keep up with is Book’s career passing yards. At 5,621, he is currently 9th on the program’s career passing yards list. If Book manages 200 or more passing yards in the final two games, his 6,000+ career yards would move him into 6th on the program’s all-time list, surpassing DeShone Kizer, Everett Golson, and Rick Mirer.
