Finish Strong

As the famous Dan Fouts said — multiple times — in The Waterboy, “It’s the last game of the year, can’t hold anything back now.”

This advice rings true for this Irish team that has been disrespected in the polls the last few weeks following blowouts over solid, ranked opponents.

At the end of the day, it’s the last regular season game and there is still a lot on the line. Between upsets this week and Conference Championship Saturday, there’s no telling what teams will trip up and open a path for a New Year’s Six Bowl game come late December/early January.

A dominating, statement win over Stanford to wrap up the regular season with a five-game win streak would be huge for this team’s confidence heading into the bowl game and off-season.

On the flip side, a collapse like we saw vs Stanford two years ago in the season finale would leave an awful taste in the mouth of this team and fan base, and would most certainly relegate the Irish to a mid-tier, mediocre bowl game.

This team needs to follow the same formula as they have the last three weeks. Get out to a fast start, use your offensive weapons to your advantage, ride the hot hand of Book, and play aggressive, swarming defense. This combination Saturday will lead to nothing but good things on the field and a great way to end the regular season.
