The fandom of the Notre Dame faithful has been tested this year.

Our parent company, FanSided, has published its annual FanSided 250. It is a comprehensive ranking of the fandoms in all over sports and entertainment. It’s a grueling project, but one that that FanSided prides itself on. It’s a unique collection and list, and one that is sure to drive conversation on blogs, podcasts, and in bars — especially in the Notre Dame universe.

As a collective fan base, Notre Dame — in all sports — came in as the No. 87 fandom on the planet. That’s pretty good. More impressive is Notre Dame’s No. 6 ranking amongst all collegiate fandoms.

Only Duke, LSU, Ohio State, Alabama and Clemson finished ahead of Notre Dame in the college category.

The list is put together and ranked based on part fan vote, part social media search results, and part social media following.

If you are going to rank the overall passion of fan bases in 2019, I can’t think of a better way to go about it.

Truth be told, the fandom of Notre Dame has been tested this year. We began 2019 rinsing the taste of a blowout loss to Clemson in the College Football Playoff out of our mouths. We then watched our beloved women’s basketball team lose in the NCAA Championship game in dramatic fashion, failing to repeat as champions.

Then came the 2019 Notre Dame football season. A close loss to Georgia gave us hope for another trip to the College Football Playoff. Then, on a rainy night in Ann Arbor just a few weeks later, that hope was washed away.

We would spend the rest of the football season bickering with one another on social media. We argued about our quarterback, our coach, and our place as a college football program.

And then we got stuck in the Camping World Bowl against a 7-5 Iowa State.

Next. Why Notre Dame should be in a better bowl. dark

It’s been along year, but through it all, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish fans remain in he conversation as the very best in all of college sports. The Notre Dame brand is still strong, and you — the fan — are the No. 1 reason why.
