Top storylines:

  • Can Notre Dame get up for this game? It seems Notre Dame players and fans alike are disappointed with their bowl seeding and having no New Years 6 bowl game, much less a College Football Playoff semi-final game. Simply put, Iowa State does not exactly pop off the screen when you see them playing Notre Dame. However, the Cyclones are a very dangerous team that, if ND doesn’t prepare accordingly for, could beat ND soundly. Iowa State has a great coach in Matt Campbell, a good quarterback in Brock Purdy and a good enough defense to really make things interesting in Orlando if the Irish don’t come ready to play.
  • How will Tom Rees fair with his new play calling duties? If you didn’t hear, QB coach and possible new Offensive Coordinator Tom Rees will be calling the plays today against Iowa State. Originally it was thought that he wants RB coach Lance Taylor would share the duties, but it appears HC Brian Kelly is giving Rees the reins to the offense. Rees knows Brian Kelly’s offense inside-and-out from his days playing QB for him, so it’s hard to imagine a guy that knows what he’s doing better than Rees. If he impresses in his play-calling debut, it’s possible Rees puts himself in a great place to earn the Offensive Coordinator position next season.

Injury report:

  • No new injuries for Notre Dame
  • Iowa State OL Colin Newell has a knee injury and is listed as questionable for the game.
