Notre Dame’s defense played excellent and with a chip on their shoulder against Iowa State in the Camping World Bowl.

Notre Dame played like they were disrespected after not getting into a New Year’s Six bowl game — and rightfully so. With what many predicted to be a hard fought game ending up being very one sided — a large part of that should be credited to the Irish Defense.

Honorable Mentions

Alohi Gilman

Gilman shined in what was his final game for Notre Dame, with his biggest play occurring in the first few minutes of the game. After Notre Dame was forced to punt on its opening drive, Gilman stripped the ball from the returner and the Irish recovered. Gilman finished the day with a total of eight tackles and a forced fumble. For a full breakdown of Gilman’s stats, click here.

Asmar Bilal

Coming into the season as one of Notre Dame’s biggest question marks when it came to returning players on defense and exiting the season as one of the most consistent and biggest surprises, Asmar was a great story to follow. While he might not have been making big plays left and right, after the first game of the season Bilal was consistent and was a great asset for the Irish Defense. Bilal finished the day with a total of seven tackles — one of which was for loss — and a pass defended. For a full breakdown of Bilal’s stats, click here.

Defensive Player of the Game

Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah

If you watched the game it was pretty obvious, he was the MVP of the defense. Wu was all over the place and making big time plays throughout the game. He finished the tremendous day with a total of nine tackles — four of those were for loss and three of those four were sacks. To go along with that, Wu also had a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

With his very impressive play in the final game of the 2019 season, he will likely be one of the most talked about players on the Notre Dame defense heading into the 2020 season. For a full breakdown of Owusu-Koramoah’s Camping World Bowl stats, click here.
