After five seasons as cornerbacks coach, Toddy Lyght and Notre Dame have parted ways.

This past season, Todd Lyght led an impressive Irish secondary. In 2019, Notre Dame was 4th in the country is passing yards allowed, only giving up 168.5 yards per game.

He was also instrumental in the development of players like Julian Love, who went from a three star prospect to an All-American. On top of that, Lyght has been an incredibly important recruiter for Notre Dame over the past five seasons.

Cornerbacks coach wasn’t Lyght’s first stop in South Bend. He was also a two time All-American as a player for Notre Dame while Lou Holtz was the coach.

Brian Kelly said, “As he leaves the university to pursue future endeavors, I’m grateful for everything Todd contributed.”

Now, it can be dangerous to try and interpret what a coach is saying in situations like these. Sometimes there is a mutual agreement to move on, sometimes a firing, and sometimes something that both parties simply don’t want the public to know about. However, it seems fairly clear that this decision to part ways came from Todd Lyght and not Brian Kelly.

It seems like Lyght may have a chance to advance his career as a coach. Maybe he’s being tapped as a defensive coordinator, or can see that he won’t get promoted to defensive coordinator anytime soon with Notre Dame.

This does leave Notre Dame with a gap in their coaching staff.

It would make sense for Terry Joseph to take over as the cornerbacks coach. He had already been working heavily with the defensive backs this past season. As of now, he’s listed as the “defensive pass game coordinator.”

Jospeh could either hold onto that role, or Notre Dame could bring in someone new for that role if he were to be promoted to cornerbacks coach. Either way, it would be good to keep some stability in a secondary that proved it can be deadly.

Next. Where could Kmet land in NFL Draft. dark

No matter who the next cornerbacks coach will be, the Irish will need to bring in a new staffer. Hopefully, the chemistry of the staff and defense isn’t bothered too much by this.
