Notre Dame Football: A look at the Tight Ends in 2020
Next in-line on the depth chart is most likely freshman Michael Mayer. I only say most likely because a lot will change between now and August 29, but it is almost guaranteed that Mayer will slot in at No. 2 behind Tremble.
The 6’4, 232 lb All-American has looked far and away the best TE in the country in the 2020 class and the Notre Dame staff knows it. Mayer excelled in the All-American game a few weeks back, catching a long touchdown from Clemson QB-commit DJ Uiagalelei.
The product of Covington Catholic High School in Alexandria, Kentucky, Mayer’s high school stats were quite impressive. In his junior and senior seasons at Covington, Mayer tallied 1999 yards and 27 TDs on 96 receptions.
Those are wide receiver numbers.
Mayer will slot in ahead of senior TE Brock Wright because of his catching ability which has already proven to be better than Wright’s. Mayer does have room to improve to blocking-wise to be on par with Wright or George Takacs, but that is much easier to teach and Mayer’s film shows his already solid blocking ability.
As young as he is, Mayer already looks an NFL tight end and will only get better once Notre Dame strength coach Matt Balis gets his hands on him.
