Notre Dame Football: A look at the Offensive Line in 2020
The clear starter at right tackle is potentially Notre Dame’s best offensive lineman, Robert Hainsey.
Hainsey was having a career season in 2019, before suffering a broken ankle against Virginia Tech. As it happens so often to offensive lineman at any level of football, Hainsey was rolled up on in a pile and broke his ankle. The injury forced the senior to miss the remainder of the season.
Hainsey returns as the best offensive lineman on the team alongside left tackle Liam Eichenberg, and will be relied on heavily to be a key player for Notre Dame in the fall.
Next, the junior Cole Mabry.
He has struggled with health in his Notre Dame career but has made strides to make himself a formidable backup tackle. After missing extended time in camp during the summer, Mabry made just one appearance on the season, in a blowout against New Mexico. Mabry will be one to watch for the spring and summer practices.
Third, is sophomore Quinn Carroll.
The Minnesota product suffered a torn ACL this past August and is still recovering and rehabbing from that. Carroll has shown potential in spurts, but his health will come first and foremost. If he can return and make strides in the spring/summer, the backup tackle position is one he could fight for alongside Mabry.
Last, is the freshman Michael Carmody.
If that last name sounds familiar around Notre Dame, it should. Michael’s brother, Robby, is a shooting guard for the Notre Dame men’s basketball team.
While Michael Carmody won’t touch the field this season, there is plenty of reason to be excited about this guy. Standing at 6’5, 283 pounds already in high school, Matt Balis will be pumped to put some muscle on Carmody’s already impressive frame.
Carmody was named to the Polynesian Bowl and All-American Bowl this winter and projects to be one of the best offensive linemen in the 2020 class.
